A petanque shot missed. Shoot again?

Should you shoot again if you miss?
Other factors could be the terrain and how hard it is to point near the jack. On fast sloping pistes it maybe easier to shoot than to point. A good boule near the jack could be a rare item indeed so to shoot twice maybe the best option. However a piste that is difficult to point means it maybe difficult to get defending boule in the right places. Two shots missed could give you just three boule to defend against a big score by the opposition. The risk of shooting twice is only compounded by missing twice. It can be considered that the player shooting may miss but it is not really a discussion point as this can lead to poor team morale. “But what if you miss?” never goes down well. On a soft deep piste shooting can sometimes be unnecessary as it can be simple to close the head down with boule placed in defensive positions. Even a heavy point coming down at the right angle will shift the boule causing a problem. On deep pistes the splash of gravel from a point or a shot may effect the same result by moving the jack. Shooting may very well be the right decision, shooting twice would be a mistake if a point could do the same job.
To summarise it is all about the score, the boule count left on each team, the type of piste and the stage of the game i.e. the start or the finish that will determine if the player in the circle shoots twice in a row. The main focus should be team play and working as a team. “Have one at it” is said by players hoping to control their shooting player heading to the circle knowing they are prone to the second rash shot but it is hardly a supportive call to arms. Have the conversation and play as a team. Shooting twice out of frustration is a slippery slope to anarchy.
