Pointing up hill and down hill in petanque

The angle of attack is just as important as the landing spot in petanque. If your throw is too soft and hits at a steep angle in deep surface area with a high semi lob your boule may stay exactly where it lands. Too low, too hard with a shallow area and the boule will skip through the head at speed. This of course also works when throwing up hill and down hill. The slope will directly affect the angle the boule lands on the ground. You can still play a semi lob down a slope but the weight needs to be taken out of the boule either with a gentle throw or giving the boule more backspin so it brakes nice and early then rolls down the slope slowly. It is a knack but comes with practice. Remember the shots in practise need to be varied so you can see what works when and where. Trying them in a game situation is brave but also can be fool hardy.
