The final Petanque waffle on this session Tactics, Understanding and explaining
In the winter months play is limited and this year especially so this month we are looking at some food for thought away from the chilly piste. This is part four of Tactics. Basic and advance tactics. We have looked at
1 Game tactics
2. Play tactics
3. Tactical discussions
Now we look at the last part 4. Tactical Heads below is the last section.
Tactical heads. Think, think, think. Try to set up different heads with boule in the head and boule still left to play. The boule should be placed on the piste with approx. positions of boule and you should, with your team discuss various options in the head. Now this is petanque and we all know there are many different solutions to the head but you should be able to discuss the various options open to your team. It may seem the simple option is to shoot the jack in ends where you are looking to lose a big score but you should be able to examine defensive as well as attacking play. Where would a boule be difficult to shoot? Have you left a jack back situation for the opposition. Although there are not many wrong answers there can be real clangers dropped. Placing your boule right on the jack when the opposition have five boule left may give them a shot for 4 if the jack dies. It is this type of thinking that can give structure and training to teams looking to improve their win rate and play. With the boule in the head you can play out the end using different options. Try 10 shots to see the effectiveness of the played boule and rate its success. If you can play the shot you require 5 out of 10 times it could be a useful tactic on the piste during a real game. If you wanted to practice on your own, try to improve on the 5 out of 10 success. This will not only give you a new tactic to use but also improve your ability to play shots called by the team. Nothing is worse for a team to agree on a tactic and the player argue against it because they know they cannot play the shot. With practice brings belief. The true secret of winning petanque.
